I am responding to your inquiry regarding the Coney Island Franklins participating in preseason contests against Division I institutions. Please note that all the Division I rules governing the operation of intercollegiate athletics programs, including contest limitations, are approved by the Division I membership through a legislative process. There are specific rules governing preseason basketball contests involving Division I institutions. A Division I institution is permitted to engage in an informal practice scrimmage with an outside team during preseason, provided it is conducted in privacy without official scoring. A Division I institution also may engage in a contest with a club member of USA Basketball on or after October 31. I don't know if you are a member of USA Basketball, but you may want to look into that possibility. Participation in contests pursuant to the above mentioned legislation is an issue for you to direct specifically to the particular Division I institution. I hope this is helpful.
